The Apple Store Kid

What does a Harlem 8th grader who wants to be a video star, but has no recording equipment, do on summer break? He goes down to the Apple Store on 5th Avenue and uses the interactive display cameras there and sends the file to his computer at home. With startled, wandering folks in the background, Nicholi White lip synchs and dances his way to becoming a youtube hit and has been invited to appear on Oprah most recently. Read about this young celebrity's rise as a youtube phenom in today's NY Post: link.

This kid's gonna go far if he's doing this at 13…brilliant format he's hit on there with the incredulous customers in the background unawares they're starring in a YouTube vid and us half expecting shop staff to shut him down part way through. Compelling.

This made me laugh today

LOL! "Duudes! The Droid is going to be a transformer! I cannot wait for that phone."

Great ad campaign. The Motorola Droid better be amazing if it's slagging off the iPhone though.

Amazon's Kindle to launch in UK

Amazon's Kindle e-book reader is going on sale in more than 100 countries around the world, including the UK.

The reader has been confined to the US since its launch in November 2007; Amazon expects to have sold a million of the devices by the end of the year.

The global version will run on the 3G network, although Amazon has not specified the networks that will provide connectivity for the devices.

The Kindle store will offer over 200,000 English language titles.

Hundreds of publishers are signed up including Penguin, Faber and Faber, and HarperCollins.

It will also carry more than 85 US and international newspapers and magazines.

"We have millions of customers in countries all over the world who read English-language books. Kindle enables these customers to think of a book and download it in less than 60 seconds," said Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Penguin chief executive John Makinson hopes it will kickstart digital book sales in Europe.

"The publishing industry is experiencing explosive growth in digital book sales in the US," he said.

KINDLE IN EUROPE
Amazon Kindle
0.36 inches thick with 6in e-ink display
2GB of internal memory
QWERTY keyboard to add notes to text
Battery life "weeks on a single charge"
USB synching for people out of coverage area

The look and feel of the device will be the same as the US version with the exception of network access.

Following difficulties making the Kindle's Whispernet wireless download system work in the Europe, Amazon has decided to make downloads available via the 3G network.

This means that people wishing to download a book outside of a 3G coverage area will have to transfer content over USB.

In May of this year, Amazon unveiled a new version of its e-reader aimed at reading magazines, newspapers and documents. The Kindle DX is currently available only in the US.

The European version of the Kindle will begin shipping on October 19 with a $279 (£175) price tag.

Vodafone enters UK iPhone market too

iPhone
The handset has boosted sales for 02

Vodafone has reached an agreement to sell Apple's popular iPhone in the UK.

The announcement follows news that network operator Orange had secured a similar agreement with Apple.

The deals mark an end to the exclusive UK arrangement between O2 and the US technology firm, which has been in place since 2007.

Vodafone says users can register an interest online, with the handsets becoming available to customers from early 2010.

Orange said its customers would be able to buy the phone "later this year" but did not specify a date or pricing.

Vodafone is one of the biggest mobile operators in the world with an estimated 300 million customers world wide, making it the second largest carrier after China Mobile.

The agreement sees both Orange and Vodafone selling both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Okay then, it's iPhones galore this Christmas. You are spoilt for choice. REALLY looking forward to some competitive tariff prices now.

Orange announces UK iPhone deal

iPhone
The handset has boosted sales for 02

Orange has reached an agreement to sell Apple's popular iPhone in the UK.

The deal ends an exclusive arrangement between UK network operator O2 and the Californian phone maker, which has been in place since 2007.

Orange said its customers would be able to buy the phone "later this year" but did not specify a date or pricing.

However, analysts said that in markets where there was already competition there was little difference in handset prices but small variations in tariffs.

"There's not a lot they can do - they are subsidising the hardware, so they can't afford to do much on the tariff," said Carolina Milanesi of Gartner.

"You may see a £30 per month tariff versus £35, but I would not expect anything more."

Excellent news. Price competition and consumer choice for the win!
