The Apple Store Kid

What does a Harlem 8th grader who wants to be a video star, but has no recording equipment, do on summer break? He goes down to the Apple Store on 5th Avenue and uses the interactive display cameras there and sends the file to his computer at home. With startled, wandering folks in the background, Nicholi White lip synchs and dances his way to becoming a youtube hit and has been invited to appear on Oprah most recently. Read about this young celebrity's rise as a youtube phenom in today's NY Post: link.

This kid's gonna go far if he's doing this at 13…brilliant format he's hit on there with the incredulous customers in the background unawares they're starring in a YouTube vid and us half expecting shop staff to shut him down part way through. Compelling.

The Times Square Church Mission to Greenock

Managed to get along to the evening Gospel service tonight in the Town Hall - part of a mission outreach in Greenock this week by a 230 strong team from Times Square Church in Manhattan led by their pastor Carter Conlon and his wife Theresa. Great service. Apparently it was streamed live on http://www.tscnyc.org too so if you'd been watching you might have seen me *waves*. People occupying 3 levels of the town hall. I didn't even know it had a second balcony quite honestly. Pastor Conlon preached on Constraining Christ: "But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them." (Luke 24:29).

These guys have been visiting churches, schools and drug rehabs, going round door to door and doing street evangelism like nobody's business and their choir has been showing the real meaning of joyful praise in the evening services, local museum and shopping mall each day. If you have a chance to get to any of the events the rest of the week you should.

7pm nightly Greenock Town Hall
7pm Sat 14th & Sun 15th Port Glasgow Town Hall
10am Sat 14th Faith & Business
10am Sat 14th Ladies' Gathering with Theresa Conlon
10pm Fri 13th Youth Meeting

Free admission.

Details, photos, videos and reports from the mission can be found at http://tscftp.org/wpblogs/InternationalOutreach/

Queen Mary 2 Publicity

Queen Mary 2 Press Ad

With this local press advert for Inverclyde Council I created a slightly more formal and understated design taking cues from the classic Cunard styling and colours.

The world's biggest cruise liner is making her first visit to the Clyde as part of a special British Isles voyage marking the introduction of the Queen Mary 2 in 2004. She will berth on Monday 19th October at Greenock's Ocean Terminal.

From Inverclyde Now:

The biggest cruise ships to come to the Clyde so far are the Princess Cruises vessels Grand Princess, Star Princess and Golden Princess, which are all about 108,000-tonnnes. Queen Mary 2 is described as the largest, longest, widest, tallest and most expensive ocean liner built.

Thousands are expected to turn out and greet the largest vessel ever to call at Greenock.

Amazon's Kindle to launch in UK

Amazon's Kindle e-book reader is going on sale in more than 100 countries around the world, including the UK.

The reader has been confined to the US since its launch in November 2007; Amazon expects to have sold a million of the devices by the end of the year.

The global version will run on the 3G network, although Amazon has not specified the networks that will provide connectivity for the devices.

The Kindle store will offer over 200,000 English language titles.

Hundreds of publishers are signed up including Penguin, Faber and Faber, and HarperCollins.

It will also carry more than 85 US and international newspapers and magazines.

"We have millions of customers in countries all over the world who read English-language books. Kindle enables these customers to think of a book and download it in less than 60 seconds," said Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Penguin chief executive John Makinson hopes it will kickstart digital book sales in Europe.

"The publishing industry is experiencing explosive growth in digital book sales in the US," he said.

KINDLE IN EUROPE
Amazon Kindle
0.36 inches thick with 6in e-ink display
2GB of internal memory
QWERTY keyboard to add notes to text
Battery life "weeks on a single charge"
USB synching for people out of coverage area

The look and feel of the device will be the same as the US version with the exception of network access.

Following difficulties making the Kindle's Whispernet wireless download system work in the Europe, Amazon has decided to make downloads available via the 3G network.

This means that people wishing to download a book outside of a 3G coverage area will have to transfer content over USB.

In May of this year, Amazon unveiled a new version of its e-reader aimed at reading magazines, newspapers and documents. The Kindle DX is currently available only in the US.

The European version of the Kindle will begin shipping on October 19 with a $279 (£175) price tag.
