Anyone who has been ogling an iPhone but not stumped for one yet might want to hold off for a week or two because today Apple announced the
iPhone 3GS. What high fu-looting technical gadgetry is the
S an abbreviation of? Well, that would be short for 'speed'. I know, whoah, slow down there! So, yeah, it's basically 3x faster than the
iPhone 3G but comes in larger capacity
16 and 32GB models at a lower price of $199 & $299 respectively (
UK prices TBC see update below*) and lower or free with a contract of course.
New iPhone 3GS features:
• 2 x faster than iPhone 3G
• increased battery life
• integrated digital compass
• 3.2 MP camera with video capture: in-phone editing & sharing, tap sensitive auto focus, macro mode and increased low light sensitivity.
• Voice Control: voice dialling, voice recording & intuitive iTunes control by spoken commands.
The product design is apparently unchanged from the previous iPhone 3G model and will be available in black and white. In a shrewd market penetration move (and to the delight of budget conscious wannabe iPhone customers everywhere) the current iPhone 3G model will remain available at the reduced price of $99 as the lowest priced option of the iPhone line.
Along with the new iPhone model Apple are releasing an update to their iPhone operating system which will be pushed out free to ALL iPhone users so everyone will benefit from a slew of nifty new capabilities they have built into the 3.0 software update depending on their iPhone's hardware capabilities.
Here are some of the 100 new features available in OS 3.0:
• multimedia messaging
• copy & paste
• Spotlight search across your phone
• tethering (use your phone as a wireless modem to your computer)
• turn by turn GPS directions
• Find my iPhone Log in online to locate it via GPS / remote wipe data
• now supports input from custom hardware devices to phone applications
• Mail support for Microsoft Exchange
This update further cements the iPhone's position as the most powerful and versatile device in the 'smart phone' marketplace and the lower price-points will make it appeal to an even broader cross-section of customers. You'll be seeing a lot more of these beautiful little bricks cropping up before anyone can talk about market saturation I think.
The iPhone 3GS and the OS 3.0 software will be available by June 19th in USA & UK and in 80 other countries by August.
